Kalundborg Shore Excursion – Too Difficult to Reach Copenhagen
Our Kalundborg Shore Excursion was a bit of a challenge. There isn’t much to see in the town of Kalundborg, so I had hoped to take a train from the port all the way to Copenhagen in order to spend a few hours there instead. Copenhagen was also a future stop on our cruise, but I felt it would be worthwhile to visit twice in order to see more sights in Copenhagen and increase the chances of experiencing good weather during part of that visit.
Unfortunately it was hard to coordinate a train trip to Copenhagen, because the Kalundborg cruise terminal is almost a half hour from the train station and cabs weren’t being per given easy access to the terminal. So, we ended up taking a shuttle from the ship to Kalundborg. Then after a brief visit to the Church of Our Lady, we walked among the old houses to the train station where we caught the train to Roskilde instead.
Kalundborg Shore Excursion – Roskilde Cathedral
I purchased train tickets from Kalundborg to Roskilde on the DSB app. The trip took about an hour through pastoral views and forests. From the station is was a pleasant 15 minute walk through the pedestrian only street to reach Roskilde Cathedral. The cathedral was impressive and exceeded my expectations. Many royalty are buried in the church. The beautiful marble and sandstone sarcophagus of Queen Margrete the First sits behind the elaborate alter and commemorates the Queen’s successful integration of Denmark, Sweden and Norway in 1397. Several other sarcophagi were also amazingly beautiful. We found the Roskilde Cathedral to be well worth the visit.
Kalundborg Shore Excursion – Viking Ship Museum
After our visit to Roskilde Cathedral, we made the 15 minute walk down to the waterfront and the Viking Ship Museum. More than half the walk was through a gigantic park with lovely trees lining the main pathway. Danish school children were on a field trip in the park and they were dancing to music at a small stage. We actually enjoyed seeing them more than we enjoyed the Viking Ship Museum.
The Viking Ship Museum has areas where you can watch wooden ship builders in action. You can board one of the Viking ship replicas. In a separate building, you can see several viking ships that have been recovered and pieced back together in a manner that reminded me of a puzzle being partially completed. Overall, I wouldn’t rate the museum that highly, but it seemed to be more popular than the Roskilde Cathedral.
Danish Cardamom
After the Viking Ship Museum, we walked back up through the park again to the pedestrian area of Roskilde. We stopped at Lagkagehuset for coffee and pastry. I tried one of the famous Danish cardamom buns, only to discover that it wasn’t one of my favorites. Then we walked back to the train station and caught the train back to Kalundborg where we caught the shuttle back to the cruise ship. The day ended up being a pretty good substitute for a quick trip to Copenhagen.
