Visit Kauai – See the Sights

  • Rent a car and drive all 100 miles of roads on Kauai.
  • See Waimea Canyon and the Spouting Horn by rental car or on a tour bus. Waimea Canyon is lovely, but light showers can easily impair the views.
  • Take a helicopter ride over Waimea Canyon and the Napali Coast. Pick your day carefully, because of the high risk of cloudy weather. An advance booking may not be a great idea.
  • Kauai Backcountry Adventures tube ride through lava tubes.

From December – March the average highs are 78 F (26 C) and the average lows are 65 F (19 C). Many homes do not have heating or air conditioning systems. Rainfall is lightest in June and July. December is the rainiest month with an average of 5 inches (130 mm). Kauai receives more precipitation than the islands to the south. For excellent weather, June is a great time to visit Kauai. Many visitors find that Christmas and spring break are great options too.

Get to Kauai

You can get to Kauai on several major airlines that fly direct to Lihu’e Airport (LIH) in the winter months. Hawaiian Airlines has regular scheduled daily flights from other Hawaiian islands. A rental car is the best option once you get to Kauai. There are less than 100 miles of road, so it’s easy to cover every section of payment.

Cruise ships dock at Nawiliwili. Major car rental companies will pick you up at the cruise ship for a one day rental. Renting a car for a shore excursion will allow you to cover about twice as much of the island as an organized cruise ship excursion.

Visit Kauai – Background

Kauai is the smallest of the four major Hawaiian Islands and the most northerly. The island of Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and it has much heavier vegetation. Over 400 inches of rainfall per year in some locations, which helps ensure that things grow so well on Kauai. Wild bougainvilleas grow in large numbers almost like weeds. The island is very small and sparsely populated. Many people consider it the most beautiful island in the Hawaiian Islands. The number of tourists and hotels is much less than in the rest of Hawaii. That’s because of the isolation of Kauai, its small size and its rugged terrain.
