Visit Atlanta – Downtown

Visit Atlanta and ride the MARTA to the Peachtree Center station. Then walk to Centennial Olympic Park. Next to the park you will find the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, SkyView Atlanta and the CNN Studio Tour. The Children’s Museum of Atlanta faces the park and the Georgia Dome is a 10 minute walk west of the CNN Center. Philips Arena for the NBA Atlanta Hawks is located between the Georgia Dome and CNN.

  • Six Flags Over Georgia – theme park, located about 15 minutes west of downtown on Interstate 20.
  • Stone Mountain – theme park with a giant granite outcropping, about 25 minutes northeast of downtown.
  • Medieval Times – eat chicken medieval style (without utensils), while watching battles being waged in the arena by knights in armour. About 30 minutes northeast of downtown on Interstate 85.

Atlanta weather in summer is hot and humid. Average highs from June – August approach 90 F (32 C) and average lows are around 70 F (21 C). Atlanta weather in winter is cool with occasional freezing temperatures. Average highs in December and January are around 55 F (13 C) while the average lows are a couple of degrees above freezing. Rainfall is fairly even throughout the year.

June to August is the peak season for visiting Atlanta, while the off season is from November to March.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the largest and busiest in the world and it’s the best way to get to Atlanta. The Atlanta airport is the head office hub for Delta Airlines. Once you get to Atlanta International Airport there are lots of hotels with free shuttles.

MARTA

From the airport, use the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit) to get downtown and see the major sights and attractions. Purchase a Breeze Card at the airport and load it with reasonably priced single, roundtrip or day pass fares. A rental car is a good option if you are interested in visiting areas other than the downtown around Centennial Olympic Park. The US Interstate system includes I20, I75, I85 and I285.

Atlanta, Georgia is in the southeastern United States. Over 5 million live in its metropolitan area. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world’s busiest airport. Atlanta is home to the largest aquarium in the world too – the Georgia Aquarium. A number of Fortune 500 companies have their headquarters in Atlanta, including Coca-Cola, Turner Broadcasting, Delta Airlines, AT&T, UPS and Home Depot. The bombings at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta are still prominent in the memory of residents. Atlanta has some of the friendliest people in the world and it’s a great place to lay over when you are headed to the Caribbean or South America.
