Djemaa el Fna, Marrakech

Visit Marrakech – Djemaa El Fna

Visit Marrakech to see Djemaa El Fna – one of the busiest squares in Africa with food, goods and entertainment from acrobats, snake charmers, musicians and dancers. The square becomes even more active at night. Then head from Djemaa el Fna to the souk and and get lost in the maze. The souk is one of the busiest markets in Africa. Also visit the Medina (old town) and Gueliz (the new town, west of Djemaa El Fna). Take a Souks and Medinas of Marrakech Tour. Or try a Marrakech Medina Walking Tour.  See the souks, the Bahia Palace, a bakery and the Photography Museum of Marrakech.

Visit Marrakech – the Kasbah

The Kasbah – South of Djemaa el Fna is the Bab Agnaou Gate to the old Kasbah. Bab Agnaou is one of 19 city gates built in the 12th century. There are 12 miles of ramparts remaining from the Kasbah or Old Fort. Near the gate you will find the Royal Palace (Dar el Makhzen) and El Badi Palace, which was built by Sultan Ahmed El-Mansour in the late 1500s. Also near the entrance to the Kasbah are the Saadian Tombs and the Mosque El Mansour.

Tourism in Marrakech

Marrakech is also spelled Marrakesh, which is thought to be a Berber word for Land of God. Marrakech is known as the Ochre City. It is a typical Moroccan city with a Medina (old town), new town, large souk, a central square and a Kasbah (old fort). The population is approximately 750,000. A bombing in the square in 2011 has not dampened tourism in Marrakech significantly.
