Getting to Lithuania

Lithuania has an interesting location in Europe. The country is bordered by Latvia, Poland, Belarus and the isolated Russian oblast of Kaliningrad. Access to Kaliningrad and Belarus are currently difficult at best. Vilnius is Lithuania’s most popular city for tourists, however Klaipeda generates quite a few visitors on cruise ships. Palanga is often called the “summer  capital” of Lithuania and is popular with locals. Kaunas is another popular destination.

By Air: The Vilnius International Airport is the main entry point to the country by air. Ryanair also flies in to Kaunas and Palanga.

Bus, not Rail: Train connections from Lithuania to Poland and Latvia are currently non-existent, but plans are in the works. Meanwhile bus connections into Lithuania are very good and very popular.

By Cruise Ship: Klaipeda is a Baltic port that receives visits from major cruise ship companies, as well as ferries from Germany and Sweden. Cruise ship excursions from Klaipeda make day trips to the Curonian Spit and the resort town of Palanga.

Lithuania’s weather is moderated in its western regions by the Baltic Sea, but this is offset by a colder continental climate along its eastern border. Temperatures are warm and comfortable in summer, but that’s also the busy tourist season.

Lithuania – Visa Requirements

Poland participates in the Schengen Zone and Schengen Visa requirements. There are no border inspections by rail or vehicle when traveling from Lithuania to Latvia or Poland. Some countries that are not members of the Schengen Zone require a Schengen Visa to enter Europe. Exemptions include citizens of Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Credit cards are widely accepted and Lithuania uses the Euro, which simplifies money matters.
