Norway has issued a travel advisory for travel to the US. The following countries have also issued an advisory for travel to the United States: Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Venezuela and China.

The Norwegian government has delayed a ban on non-zero-emission cruise ships in its World Heritage fjords at Geirangerfjord and Flåm, from 2026 to 2032 for larger ships. However, smaller ships and passenger ferries must still be zero-emission by 2026. This delay allows cruise lines more time to adapt to cleaner technologies.

One of the best ways to discover Norway is with Hurtigruten Norwegian Cruises. Hurtigruten travels from Bergen to more than 25 coastal villages including Trondheim, the Lofoten Islands, Tromso, the North Cape, Kirkenes and even the island of Svalbard. Voyages can take you beyond the Arctic Circle in search of the Northern Lights in winter or the Midnight Sun in summer. In summer, some voyages visit Geirangerfjord. Hurtigruten can also provide pre or post cruise excursions to Flam through the standard options provided by Norway in a Nutshell.

Best Time to Visit Norway

June – August are the best months to visit Norway. Summers are short and cool at this northerly latitude. Late June is a great choice for visiting the fjords as the waterfalls will at their highest volume and the mountain passes will all be open by then. You will find about a 65% chance of rain no matter what time of year you visit Norway. With the midnight sun in June and July you increase the chances of also having sunshine on the same day that it was rainy. While it’s possible to avoid the crowds in May and early June, you may find that many attractions and mountain passes are closed. September weather is much colder and has the highest rainfall in many areas.

Also consider visiting Norway on May 17th for National Day when you will find many parades and locals wearing traditional dress.

Northern Lights

November through February is the best time to see the Northern Lights. Combine your quest for the northern lights with the Christmas markets that are very popular in many cities and towns in Norway.

Norway – Visa Requirements

Norway participates in the Schengen Zone and Schengen Visa requirements, even though it isn’t a member of the European Union. Some countries that are not members of the Schengen Zone require a Schengen Visa to enter Europe. More than 40 countries outside the Schengen Zone do not require a visa. Exemptions include citizens of Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Check your specific country at VisaHQ. For a list of exempt countries, visit Project Visa.

Norway has 28 remaining wooden stave churches. In medieval times there were perhaps 1,300 stave churches in Norway. Many of these are found in remote areas in the western fjords. The oldest remaining ones, such as Urnes Stave Church were started in the 11th century. The Fantoft Stave Church is located about 15 minutes from downtown Bergen.
