Visit Antigua – Nelson’s Dockyard
Nelson’s Dockyard – Visit the biggest British naval yard in the Caribbean. It has a museum, boutiques and restored buildings that are now part of a national park.
Shirley Heights – Catch views of English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard from this historical site, originally built as a signal station to alert troops of approaching ships.
Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre – the history of Antigua is presented, including grounds with historic ruins and a display of 18th century artifacts collected from the island.

Beaches – Antigua has lots of white sand beaches. Try Half Moon Bay Beach on the southeast coast. It has nearly a mile of sandy beach, palm trees, excellent snorkeling and parasailing.

Great Bird Island – This islet, 2 miles northeast of Antigua, is very small. It’s the only place in the world to see an Antiguan racer in the wild.

Antigua Weather
The island of Antigua has weather typical of the Caribbean. The period from Christmas to spring break is the height of tourist activity. Avoid the hurricane season from June to November. Antigua and Barbuda can be hit hard by hurricanes.

VC Bird International Airport in Antigua is a busy destination. It receives non-stop flights from the United States, Canada and Britain. St John’s is the cruise port for Antigua. Many different cruise lines visit the island.

The islands of Antigua (pronounced An-tee’-ga) and Barbuda form a single country in the Leeward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. Immediately to their west are the islands of St Kitts & Nevis and the active volcano on Montserrat. The island of Guadaloupe is directly south. Antigua and Barbuda were founded by the British Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1784. Antigua is about 14 miles long and 11 miles wide. Most of its 70,000 inhabitants live in the capital of St John’s (not to be confused with St John in the US Virgin Islands). Antigua is a center for online gambling. Barbuda is a very small and flat coral island. In 2017 Hurricane Irma destroyed the island of Barbuda and all the people who lived there were evacuated.
